Understanding Spirited Away: Consumption and Identity [New link]

Hi all! I’ve been getting lots of requests to reupload the Spirited Away video that got taken down months ago (Studio Ghibli being infamous for that sort of thing as you may know). I lost the original file but luckily, a viewer sent me a link to an archive version of the video! Thank you so much, mustelbazi! [Update: here’s a download link.]

I tried to upload it to Vimeo but within minutes of doing so I found my account was shut down (Ghibli don’t play). But at least I have a copy on my hard drive so if anything happens to the archive version, I can find some way to reupload.

Either way, I’m so grateful to have recovered this video. It’s one of my favorites and probably the one that seems to speak to the most people. Thank you all for hanging in there.

  1. Hey, I’m the guy who reuploaded that video on archive.org (I ended up finding it by searching the original URL on the Wayback Machine). It’s an excellent video, and it really helped me gain a deeper understanding and respect for the film than I initially had. I’m happy I could help.

      2. Hi there! Thank you so much for your comment (which I had to run through Google translate lol)… I would definitely love more subtitles for my videos. I don’t suppose you’d be interested in writing a Portuguese translation…? XD

  3. Hi, I absolutely love your channel. I’m doing my Phd and I usually joke that I’m getting my other degree in film thought youtube 🙂
Thank you for your artistic eye, it is so refreshing

If you ever need help with the translation to Spanish I can help 🙂

  4. Hi Margarita! Watching your Spirited Away has been one of the most impactful videos I’ve watched in my life – I’ve thought about it quite often since I first watched it in sometime in 2018. I used to listen to it on repeat in the mornings on the way to work. I tried checking these links, but unfortunately they have been taken down. I have no intention of posting it anywhere else (and based on your experience, it would be fruitless anyway) – would it be possible for me to download just for my own personal reference? It’s gotten me through a lot of depressive episodes and I would love to have it available when times inevitably get tough again 🙂 Thank you!

    1. Hi Fran! Thank you so much for your lovely words; they really mean a lot to me. Absolutely you can download the video! There is a download link in the post (in brackets) that should still be working. If that doesn’t work for you, you can send me a private message with your email and I’ll send you the link. Have a wonderful day! 🙏🙏

      1. hi plainflavoredenglish! I am a huge fan of your spirited away video and none of the links seem to work on my computer and it’s not letting me download it. I used to watch it over and over again because it was such an incredible breakdown of the movie and it brings me great joy. Is there any other way besides the links that I could use to access the video?

      2. Hello, as always love your video. Really impressed by the thoughts and the reflection on such a timeless classic. Still hoping to see some more videos from you at some point! This is also a timelessly classic analysis!
